New order in the Gulf region
Creating a public transport system for Sharjah
Planning and dispatching with MICROBUS
A modern public transport system for Sharjah – this is the goal of the third-largest emirate in the United Arab Emirates. Currently, private bus services, taxis, and thousands of commuters regularly cause traffic snarl-ups, but the aim is that in future an efficient bus network will ensure that the traffic flows smoothly. The public transport system will be planned and operated using MICROBUS, the reliable planning software of IVU Traffic Technologies AG. The company responsible for setting up the new transport system has ordered all the key software modules from the Berlin-based company.
Sharjah has a population of more than 800,000, and many people travel to work in neighbouring Dubai. The large numbers of commuters are causing increasing problems during rush hours in the mornings and evenings. In addition, the city of Sharjah, with its many traditional buildings, has successfully been marketing itself as a cultural centre, which is generating a steadily increasing flow of tourists. This has further increased the traffic burden on the roads. The administration of Sharjah city is therefore planning to establish a completely new public transport system, and the private “Kuwait and Gulf Link Transport (KGL) – Passenger Transport Services (Sharjah Branch)” will be responsible for the planning and subsequent operations. About 200 busses will be running in future providing regular services, the preparations for this are already underway. The timetables, vehicle deployment and duty rosters for the new public transport service will be administered and developed using MICROBUS – its reliable optimisation algorithms will ensure the efficient deployment of vehicles and personnel. Also from the start KGL is in addition relying on the software from IVU for dispatching vehicles and drivers.
“We are pleased to receive this order”, said Martin Müller-Elschner, Member of the Management Board of IVU. “First of all, because this is now the second customer we have been able to win in the Arab Region. But also because our system is now so mature that it is able to meet all the demands placed on it.”
With the project for the city of Sharjah IVU has won a second major customer in the Arab Region. MICROBUS has already been in use with the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) of Dubai since 2004.
